BE A MEMBER OF MET-TEC!

What is MET-TEC?

METalworking Technical Evaluation Committees (MET-TEC) will be evaluating parts made by individuals seeking to earn NIMS credentials. MET-TEC's will be evaluating individual performances on the job/machining duties, measuring the part against all applicable specifications to the NIMS standards. The MET-TEC members will then sign an affidavit attesting to their findings..

Wait A Minute, What Is NIMS?

The National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Inc. (NIMS) is a nonprofit organization formed in 1995 to support the development of a skilled workforce for the metalworking industry. NIMS's support is accomplished by;

  1. developing, writing, validating, and maintaining metalworking Numerals skills standards;
  2. credentialing the skills of individuals against the skill standards:
  3. certifying training programs that train to the skill standards and meet NIMS quality requirements; and
  4. assisting states, schools, and companies to form partnerships to implement the skills standards, achieve program certification, and credential trainees and workers.

What Is A NIMS Credential?

A NIMS credential is recognition that an individual's competencies have been validated against a set of industry-written skill standards. Skill validation or certification involves meeting the performance requirements and passing a knowledge skill examination required for the credential.

How Does This Process Work?

Performance evaluations are designed to provide evidence that the registered applicant can:

  • read and interpret part prints, including the requisite symbology;
  • follow written procedures;
  • perform the necessary machine operations accurately;
  • make a part in accordance with NIMS specifications
  • observe shop safety rules and practices at all times; and
  • use appropriate precision measuring instruments.

Credentialing applicants must have a sponsor, usually a work supervisor or training instructor, who must attest to three conditions regarding the applicant's performance:

  • the applicant performed the duty with very little, if any assistance;
  • the applicant understands and practices appropriate shop safety procedures; and
  • the applicant's performance met or exceeded NIMS required standards for the duty.

Once the student's Performance Affidavit has been complete, that part will then be sent to a MET-TEC for review.
